What can it not do?

A VIES answer reflects the member state database at consultation time; invalid means not valid for cross-border (intra-EU) transactions on that day. Some member states, including DE and ES, do not return name or address. Structure checks use the European Commission published table; no national check-digit test is applied. Unavailable means the member state or VIES did not answer; check again later. Covers the 27 EU member states and Northern Ireland (XI) only. Not tax advice; this does not decide whether reverse charge applies.
